You may have heard the statement before that A goal is a dream with a date. It is important to understand that your goal will remain a dream unless powerful purposes combine with targeted action planning to arrive at a pre-determined place in time. A myriad of factors can get in the way of planning, designing, implementing, and achieving goals. Below, I’ve identified and shared twelve common barriers to the Goal setting process.

Some individuals have never been exposed to the ideas and principles related to goal setting, so they lack awareness and knowledge about the process.

A fear of failure can inhibit someone’s ability to set goals.

A fear of success, also known as “Tall Poppy Syndrome” may lead a person tohold back from setting goals.

Many people haven’t seriously thought about what they want out of life.

Sometimes, the stories we tell ourselves keep us from launching a goal.

The stories other people tell us can hold us back too.

Past experiences such as missing the mark on goal achievement may lead to the belief that goal achievement just isn’t meant to be.

It can be extremely difficult for some people to leave their comfort zone and take a chance on themselves.

Change can be scary, and being reluctant to change may be perceived as a possible strength.

Self-esteem issues can often get in the way of feeling like we deserve a better future.

People often feel underwhelmed, and believe that motivation must show up somewhere in their life before they can ever hope to achieve a goal.
